Ubisoft Attorneys Target Graphic Parody of 'Assassin’s Creed' Spokeswoman

Submitted by thankeeka on November 19, 2007 - 1:56pm. Females in Gaming News

I really feel bad for Jade Raymond, and this story is probably the greatest indicator as to why something is wrong in the industry in regards to how not enough women are involved with it. The fact is that the community itself is just not friendly to women. You take a high profile game that a woman was involved with, and immediately people question her credentials and think she is nothing more than a pretty girl with sex appeal Ubisoft is using for that reason. Oh sure, it couldn't be that she is qualified for the job...no, no woman is qualified for that. And now some people are getting in trouble over a very tasteless comic depicting Jade and I hope they get whatever is coming to them.

You can go to gamepolitics.com for the full story.

Freedom versus Freedom

Personally, I believe the lawsuit is justified - this is someone using Jade's image (which, we would agree is her property), and doing something pretty crappy with it.

The only question is - is she considered a "public figure" (which would mean in some courts that she's fair game for parody).

Either way, I'm rather annoyed with the gamer guy talk of "Oh, she's just there because she's pretty - she has no real talent save for blah, blah, blah" - all while they praise her game.

I love games, but sometimes I wish we could do without the gamers.
