Texas Cheat'em (XBOX 360)

Submitted by mr715 on May 25, 2009 - 7:04pm. Exclusive Game Review

Texas Cheatem Showing your poker face has no bearing here. This game shows that cheating is a good thing, and can be somewhat fun in an Einstein thinking sorta-way. If you are a true to heart Texas Holdem player, this game may not be for you. This is definitely the type of poker that I would consider leisure playing, just as the Poker Smash puzzle game from last year.

The gist of the game is to play your Texas Holdem hand just as you would in real life, except when you have a crummy hand or are just board with the hand you have been dealt, you can go into cheat-mode thinking. When you decide you want to cheat with your opponent’s cards, you select from a plethora of cheating options (ie. rolling dice or playing against others in the game) to get a better hand or to guarantee yourself the best hand and win. Each cheat mode has its own mini-game, and you must win that challenge, either by luck, or a little skill, in order to accomplish that specific cheat.

Some cheats just do not make sense to play when you are dealt certain hands, but some, like stealing your opponent’s money, is a cheat you can use at almost any time and feel good when that mini-game is accomplished. So a little strategy and thinking is in order when playing this game. And with the advent of Cheat Points in the game, this allows you and others to start the game with the same amount. But use them wisely, as if you use them all and lose at your mini-games you will be left with none and at a severe disadvantage from your opponents.

The Positives are: Mulitplayer play, Leaderboards, games are pretty quick, pretty fun to play as a time waster, and CHEATING!

The Negatives are: even though there is multiplayer, it was a little hard to find full games, and this may be hard once the game is out longer. For die-hard Texas Holdem fans this may not be your cup of tea, as cheating can allow others to steal your Royal Flush hand.

Overall this game should be downloaded and tried, to at least see if it may capture your interest. It is a pretty cool idea all in all, having to cheat to win. I give this game a 3.5 out of 5, but if I could guarantee that the game would have a lot of players down the road, it may jump to a 4, but I just don’t see it being popular enough to keep everyone coming back, as so much as it being a leisure pickup game, every once in a while.
