Parliament Member Points Finger at Games

Submitted by thankeeka on January 8, 2007 - 9:54am. General News

I love the British. There are so many great British actors out there, they have the best accents, and they produce some of the strangest and yet funniest comedy ever...such as this post by Parliament member Boris Johnson who thinks the primary reason for the decline in reading is linked to videogames. Really, there are some classic lines in this one regarding videogames.

From the article:

Between 1997 and 2003, the number of British children who claimed reading wasn't fun apparently rose from 23% to 35%. Could youth interest simply be shifting to different kinds of entertainment in our modern, electronic-driven culture? Probably, but Parliament member Boris Johnson thinks the primary reason for the decline is linked to videogames.

"In spite of all our cash and effort, the surveys increasingly show that children (especially boys) regard reading as a chore, something that needs to be accomplished for the sake of passing tests, not as a joy in itself. It is a disaster, and I refuse to believe that these hypnotic little machines are innocent," he says.

Haha! Well what a surprise,

Haha! Well what a surprise, some ignorant politician slams games without even the slightest bit of knowledge on them. Ive heard this all before I think. Does this man realise that in some cases, the only reading children are doing is what they read in computer games? They deserve praise for that. Oh wait, Im forgetting something. Every single computer game ever made is a Doom remake with little objective other than to bask its gory shooting fest glory.

Seen as how Im English an all that, maybe I should lend him a few of my games. Planescape: Torment springs to mind, as thats basically a brilliant piece of interactive literature.
