E3 2006: Killzone Liberation (PSP) - Impressions

Submitted by thankeeka on May 20, 2006 - 12:24am. Game Preview

Gun Him DownKillzone Liberation is a direct sequel to the original Killzone for the PS2 that takes place two months after the first game, but unlike that first game, Killzone Liberation moves far away from the realm of the first person shooter genre and into a third person iso perspective adventure. While the game technically works in this new perspective, the change over doesn't come easy.

Graphically, Killzone Liberation is a crisp and clear adventure on the PSP with sharp details to the environment and character models that are animated quite nicely, but it can be hard to discern details from them given the relative small nature of fitting them on the PSP. The environment of the preview build – it appeared to be a shipping dock – featured various colored crates stacked about the environment, typically leading the player through their one discernable path, making the level feel rather like a maze a mouse might run through in a laboratory.

Given its first person shooter roots, Killzone Liberation is focused mainly around the weapons, with each one requiring a certain finesse and style to properly use. I was told by one of the developers that with one weapon the player might be able to simply point and shoot, but with one like the machine gun the player has to be a bit more methodical in the way they tackle the enemies. In other words, weapons featuring a large radius can rely simply on "pray and spray" mechanics while more pinpoint weapons require quick bursts and carefully hiding behind cover.

One interesting gameplay mechanic was the use of slow-mo whenever the player goes into their information screen by pressing on the directional pad; the slow-mo mechanic allows the action to continue on but yet give players the ability to analyze information without having to wade through several screens and forgetting what the action was like when they paused the game in the first place.

Though not featured in the preview, the developers promised that vehicle combat would be included in the final game, featuring such vehicles as tanks and hovercrafts among others. How the vehicles are incorporated and control in the third person iso adventure remains to be seen still. Another promised featured that wasn't viewable in the preview is the ability to collect points that the player can use to upgrade their weapons.

Laser SightedWhile chatting with one of the developers several other bits of information were spilled, including that the game will feature co-op gameplay through the levels, the game will span four chapters at four levels apiece, and that the ability to save will be featured at the end of every level once it is completed.

It still remains to be seen how all the final elements will merge in the final product when it is released, but the current foundation is solid and looks to please fans of the original game, even if it does diverge from the genre path established by the first game in the franchise.
