E3 2006: Destroy All Humans! 2 (PS2) - Impressions

Submitted by thankeeka on May 20, 2006 - 12:29am. Game Preview

FireWho doesn't love aliens? Whether they be the friendly candy eating variety or the "humanity shall bow before us" aliens of classic B-movies, everyone loves a good alien. Apparently people loved the adventures of Crypto well enough to warrant a sequel, and so he is back once again, though in a new era, to wreak some havoc and to anal probe some more unwilling humans.

Set during the 60s – a time of peace, love, and the Cold War – Crypto will find himself once again trying to invade Earth. For the most part Destroy All Humans 2 looks to continue the tradition of the first game, as almost everything seemed exactly like the original. The environments looked more detailed than I remember from the first game, and the character models for both Crypto and the humans roaming the streets looked more refined than they were in the last game, but overall they still had that same feel.

As Crypto, the player runs about the open ended game world, causing mischief wherever he goes. Running around as a big headed gray alien would be enough to cause people to run in terror on a normal day, but those feet run a bit faster when an evil grinning alien comes chasing people down with his assortment of weapons and special powers. The weapons seemed to be the same as the last game, as Crypto's shockray gun was back (bolts of lightning zap enemies until their death) as was Crypto's raygun that could turn any enemy into skinless bones and sacks of black ash after only a few hits. Besides the mechanical weapons at Crypto's disposal, his mental abilities are back in force, including his ability to takeover individuals, read minds, and perform telekinesis. The telekinesis ability was my favorite of his powers, as it was extremely enjoyable to pick objects up, walk around, and then throw them wherever I wanted.

MeteorI skipped over one specific weapon, but that was on purpose, because it really is deserving of a paragraph all on its own. Crypto now features the ability to call on a meteorite to come crashing down to the ground, and it was graphically the best part of the game and also that one single selling point of the game to me. Once the meteorite weapon is selected, the player then places a cursor on the ground while they hold down the activation button, and then after a few seconds your cursor will change color to let the player know that the meteor is now available. After the player triggers the weapon, a large burning rock from space comes falling down and instantly sets ablaze all that it doesn't destroy during its collision course with Earth. Not only does the attack look amazing by itself, but the resulting explosions, should it land on any vehicles, really make the moment that much more rewarding.

The controls were also very natural as I was able to pick up the controller and move around easily without ever once having to read the instructions that were provided for me. Combat was also a breeze as it didn't take any effort to target an enemy and strafe around while firing back my own weapons. Firing weapons, using powers, and jumping around were all easy to execute during my time with the preview.
